Cooking with Dad: A Cantonese New Year

Flavours | 3:51 mins

Every Lunar New Year, Chinese families gather for reunion dinners – but these meals aren’t special just because of the food, but the people you eat with.

Watch Douglas (or Ah De from Hong Kong as some might know him from his Mediacorp appearances as a stuntman) and his daughter prepare this Cantonese dish ‘Oyster and Black Sea Moss’. Because oyster in Mandarin sounds like ‘good things’, and sea moss sounds like ‘wealth’, the Cantonese believe that you’ll get wealth and good happenings after eating the dish! 😉

From all of us at Our Grandfather Story, have a blessed Lunar New Year!
